Senate Considering Consolidating Fed Powers

It looks like the Senate will have its say on the regulatory oversight of the Federal Reserve. Apparently not impressed with by the job of the Fed moving the U.S. out of recession, the Senate is considering lumping regulatory powers into fewer administrative agencies. According to a Washingtonpost.com article, Brady Dennis writes, "Senators on both sides of the aisle have expressed a lack of confidence in the Fed in the wake of the financial crisis, challenging everything from the central bank's transparency to its ability to protect consumers." Once the belle of the ball, now Cinderella can't get a date.

Hi Ho Silver!

Who knew the silver troy ounces my grandmother would give us every christmas would pay off. According to the latest estimates on WSJ.com, the 25+ ounces I have in safe keeping are worth somewhere between $400-500. Not bad for government work, as they say. So when the zombie apocalypse hits, I'll be bartering silver coins for food and guns...

Finding Room in Your Budget

What a year we're having. How do you budget in times like this? Do you have a budget? I'll give you a few ideas to help you manage your budget and find a couple extra bucks to make some room to breathe:

1) Check your cell phone plan. ATT, Sprint, Verizon change up their offerings all the time. Their messaging plans, internet plans, etc change price and you might be able to trim some fat that way. Monitoring services like your cell phone plan may help you save money you'd otherwise be throwing away.

2) Check your interest rates. Do you have a car loan? Did you know it is easy to refinance if you go with another bank? Check your local credit union. I recently did this and lowered my interest rate from 8% to 5.75%...for a savings of nearly $2000 over the life of the loan.

3) Watch those credit card offers. Do you have more than one credit card? Do you get those balance transfer offers? For a small fee (1% most of the time) you can transfer your balance to the other card and often for a lower locked rate or no rate at all. That means for a balance of $5000 on your credit card, you might pay $50 to transfer, but rather than 10, 15 or 20%, you may lock in for 3.99%. That is HUGE savings over the life of the loan. You can pay off debt dramatically quicker.

Good luck people. Check back for more savings ideas!

Windows Gadgets

I just picked up a new (refurbed) Dell Inspiron 13. I love it. It came with Windows Vista Home Premium. I have mixed emotions, but overall, I really like it. The new "big deal" seems to be gagets and aps. One gadget I found is the file extension gadget.

Basically, this gadget searches for errors and helps you fix them. That sounds like a great service for me. I recently tried to install the pandora gadget, but had problems related to my 64 bit processor. I'll check it out and let you know what I find.

Discussing the Previous Day

Anyone check out the videos? any thoughts on what you saw?

I love the "Dear Sister" SNL skit. I had to watch the original scene from the OC for context. It's still funny either way. Fred Armisen is a great character actor, however, Bill Hader has to be my favorite right now on SNL.

as for Douche Penn...what can I say? I don't care about people wanting to marry other people. It's a ridiculously overrated "cause" and if I were a starving, mosquito bitten, AIDS infected, diamond mining african child, I'd be pissed.

I'm not against gay marriage rights, I just think our time, energy, and money could be spent a billion other injustices. Hey gay dudes, take it from one straight married dude....the grass ain't always greener.

Just my humble opinion...

Plastic Matching

I collect vintage GI Joe's. For the last 5-6 years I've been trying to hit up the local toy show that is in town in August. This has been problematic during the last two summers because we travel around the same time. This year shouldn't be an issue. I use a matching plastic guide to help find the right replacement parts. It's a great product and it helps me when I'm missing pieces and need custom parts.

A Return to Blogging

So, why not keep on doing a good thing? I have some time, so I'm going to try to keep up my blogging. I'll post things that make me laugh and make me mad. Right now that's these things:
